Prof Dr Ahsan Habib Helal was born in Shihali village under Shibganj Upzilla of Bogura District, Bangladesh. He passed SSC in 1983 from Bogura Zilla School and HSC in 1985 from Government Azizul Haque College, Bogura. He completed MBBS degree from Chittagong Medical College in 1993. He joined the Bangladesh Civil Services (17th BCS-Health Cadre) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 1997 as Medical Officer. Dr Ahsan completed MD (Neurology) degree from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in 2011. In the same year, he left the government job and joined as Assistant professor in the department of Neurology at the same university. He was promoted as Associate professor in 2016 and Professor of Neurology in 2022.

As a Neurologist, Dr Ahsan has special interest on Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. After joining the department of Neurology, BSMMU he was directly involved with the weekly Movement Disorder Clinic of BSMMU. For improved treatment and research of Movement disorders in Bangladesh he took initiative to form the Movement Disorder Society of Bangladesh.

Beside national seminars and congresses he participated in more than twenty international workshops, short course training, seminars, congress abroad. He received a travel grant for a poster presentation on Writer’s cramp at the International Congress of Movement Disorders in Sydney, Australia in 2014.

Dr Ahsan is involved with national and international research work. He is the principal investigator of genetic study of Bangladeshi Wilson’s disease patient. He is Co-Principal investigator of “Cognitive function of Parkinson’s disease patient”, which is a collaborative research between BSMMU and Queen Marry University of London (QMUL).

Genetic study of 150 million Parkinson’s disease patients will be done worldwide under the supervision of Michael J Fox Foundation. The aim of this research is long term management of Parkinson’s disease, intervention of new therapy, observing variation of different symptoms of Parkinson’s disease according to race and ethnicity and intervention of new treatment according to individual expressivity of symptoms of the disease. Six hundred Parkinson’s disease patients will be recruited from Bangladesh for genetic study. Dr Ahsan is the main investigator of the Bangaladesh part of this research work.

Dr Ahsan is also involved with another international research work on a baseline survey of Parkinson’s disease patients. In total, thirteen countries of South Asia, Middle East and North America are involved in this study. Dr Ahsan is Principal Investigator of Bangladesh part of this research work.

More than thirty five scientific articles by Dr Ahsan have been published in national and international scientific journals.
